KRS ONE Between Da Protests

KRS ONE dropped his new one Between Da Protests a couple weeks back. Holy shit, he brought the boom bap! This is the best hip hop album I’ve heard in a long time. KRS lays is down with woke political that’s always been his signature in track like Don’t Fall For it, Black Black Black and through every track on this. His rhymes and flow are still on point as always. The producing brings back an old era that has been lacking in the myriad of 808 trap that rules the present landscape of hip hop. This is a hard breath of air we need in the current post hope reality. Bump this shit loud. Check the links below for this.

Punk Politics #48

Hoping to help set some things straight on the White Supremacists. The media keeps only mentioning factions like Proud Boys who’ve sprung up in the last 5 years. This shit goes back and goes deep. Since the 1800’s the Klan has been around and is still active in every state of the continental U.S. Around the 1970’s or 80’s Neo-Nazis started happening broken into varying factions. There’s militias that operate out of training compounds throughout remote parts of this nation, they believe in what’s called RAHOWA (racial holy war) the shit we’ve been seeing play out. There’s the nazi gangs that I’ve seen around since the 90’s. These are the crazy white dudes with racist tats and meth. These hateful mutants have been building a cultural infrastructure for decades. They have music, record labels, clothing brands, publishing and a host of other cultural outlets to celebrate their hate. The movements we’ve seen with the rise of Trump are the culmination and mainstreaming of this work. Back in the 90’s through early 00’s there was Anti-Racist Action that would chase these guys out of punk shows and neighborhoods. After some firebombings and a badly planned public attack of White Nationalists in Chicago this whole thing fell off. With a lack of anti-racist enforcement at shows their tolerated underground presence likely helped them reach the levels we were seeing in 2015 through now. The motto was expose confront act. ARA had chapters throughout the country and anyone who was down could start one up with the goal of spreading anti-racist ideas. How you did this was up to the chapter. You didn’t necessarily have to fight every nazi goon to achieve it, but that may be required at times. If we’re gonna win our society back, we need to bring back ARA. Big events only fight racism in a broad stroke manner when we need to work block by block on a daily basis. Links below for further research and help taking action

Punk Politics #47

So we’re just over a week past the white supremacist demonstration in the halls of congress. The mask hasn’t simply slipped off the Republican party, they tore it up and set fire to it. Blue lives only mattered when it was useful for silencing black lives as they attacked cops and killed one. This was white racism plain and fuckin simple. They had tattoos, symbols and strung up an Odin cross in the Capitol. The most important thing to know is that this wasn’t even the main event. The white supremacists have been building a cultural infrastructure within the subculture of neo-nazi and Klan movements for several decades. I was warning on this 20 years ago. This was their coming out party to go fully mainstream within the fertile ground that Trump and both major parties have been dutifully tending since the Reagan administration. The Democrats are equally complicit as most of the party continues to accept this dominant paradigm of whiteness between selling bout and shutting down any revolutionary thought in their party. coming from a background of fighting Nazis in the streets, I honestly believe that absolute horror is gonna become a regular problem for normies and not just punks and Antifa. Neither of those are groups, they are ideological social movements. We can fight this and win. It’s a daily battle of one square inch at a time. We start by examining in killing our own bullshit. You’re not an Antiracist if you haven’t dealt with any prejudice that may reside in you and it ain’t revolution if you’re fakin the funk. The different factions of the “left” need to be fully intersectional. Everyone’s cause is everyone’s fight whether it’s Black Lives Matter, water protection, immigration band prison reform, economic and environmental justice. The line is in the fucking sand. We are all co-conspirators and accomplices, it’s simply a matter of which side you’re on. This isn’t all about fist fights. These are debates with people in our lives, these are being informed at the ballot boxes and confronting this hatred head on. This is a cancer and the treatment must be multi faceted. #punkvoter

Bad Operation review

Recently the New Orleans New Tone pioneers Bad Operation dropped their debut on Bad Time Records. Wtf is New Tone? Well, take the political forefront of 2 Tone and it’s smoothed out stylings then add some modern ska punk to it. Think Specials meets Big D and The Kid’s Table. Holy checkers is this album fucking amazing! If you consider yourself ska, rude or just ska curious then Bad Operation is what you need in life! Right from track 1 this gets you moving and thinking. My standouts on this are the title track and Siren’s call. Evidence that ska is the revolution you can dance too. Get ahold of those now. Blast it loud enough to freak out your neighbors and dance till you’re in fighting shape!

Punk Politics #46

I’m fuckin concerned that we may not be rid of Trump come January. Between his comments overall, the sudden demand to increase stimulus payments and that his latest pardons include 4 blackwater mercs who were responsible for the nisour square massacre. Furthermore he’s close friends with the founder of Blackwater which is just typical of a man who clearly wants to be a South American style dictator. So he’s in essence trying to buy the people’s loyalty and has shorn up his relationship with a private military. And the clear evidence the Trump is acting as though he does want a government shutdown which would mean there’s no money to pay those that would do something about him not being willing to vacate office. Not sure it’s a conspiracy theory when Trump has said multiple times that he’s not leaving office, has been working tirelessly to overturn the election while flaunting his relationship with white supremacist groups and mercenaries. While Biden is certainly no prize or victory, I at least want El Trumpe to fuckin leave. Anyone else tired of living in unprecedented times?

Punk Politics Special: Punk Voter reborn

Break in, break in. This is a call to arms. Trump is more or less on his way out. But it’s not at all a victory as Biden is more of the same. We need to start right the fuck now if we want things to change in any meaningful way. My answer is Punk Voter. What is this? Nothing new. It was a movement during Bush’s first term to have the whole punk community get out the vote that was largely led by some bands I highly respect and Fat Mike. This movement had some pitfalls as it had a single minded objective of getting GW out of office (Kerry would not have been an improvement). After Bush won a second term this was largely abandoned by the “stars” and framework that was buffering it. No shade intended, but we don’t need stars. Punk is movement from the underground up. It starts with the kid in the garage or basement that wants to do something and has the guts to take it out to the streets. This isn’t just for the punx. It’s for all who are still the kid going “things are shit right now, but we can do better”. Yes, we can have change via the vote of we start taking action and stop accepting whatever garbage they throw before us every 4 years. So I am asking who wants to be a part of this and work some real progress? If we pool our minds and resources, shit can be different. If you read this and it speaks to you, hit me up with ideas and let’s build the underground network. #punkvoter

Thoughts on shows

For the punk community 2020 has sucked as shows haven’t been that viable. We all think about this magical return to “normal” which is a strange thought for a culture that thrives on being abnormal. I think the way forward is hybrid where all live shows are streamed. Because you could have a group of punks in like Kansas or wherever have a house party for a show in any part of the world. The bands and venue staff could then have work no matter the conditions and the idea of punk which has mostly spread through touring could potentially spread further than it ever has. We’ve proven you can sell tickets for streaming events and we can continue that. Charge maybe a lower price than you would for showing up in person. I’m no expert, but clearly we gotta evolve in a changing world.

Yungblud- Weird review

Last week Yungblud’s latest full length dropped. Now, I know that on simply hearing the music that maybe it doesn’t sound at all punk aside from Strawberry Lipstick (total 77 scream out) or the clearly Cure influenced title track. But if you really think about it, this is punk fucking rock. This whole thing is an ideological “fuck you” to this conservative hellscape we’ve been living through the way hard core was during the Reagan administration. Every fucking song means something, it’s not some empty pop shit to be forgotten 10 minutes later. Honestly, it’s something I wish existed when I was 17 and really dealing with the fight between “fuck society” and “loneliness kinda hurts”. My stand out track on this is a tie between God Save Me and Weird. This is the album 2020 needed in a year where we’ve all been forced to hang out with our problems and actually deal with em. No matter how hardcore you are, there’s something on this album to resonate with, so check it out.

Reviews

Yes, we do album reviews free of charge. Just hit me up at one of the below links and send a link where I can listen to it. If I like your stuff, I’ll review it and say many nice things. If I don’t, I’ll tell ya and not do a review. That’s right, we don’t do shitty reviews. We may not be big like Alternative Press or MRR ( it is only one writer) but at least it’s a free review by someone who genuinely digs your shit. DM is the best way to get a hold of me

Appalachian Terror Unit- Greenwashing

In 2007 an absolute classic of brutal crust came screaming from the backwoods of West Virginia. Appalachian Terror Unit with their full length Greenwashing. This is 8 tracks of punishing doom rammed up your ass at breakneck speed. We can again thank Profane Existence for putting this beast out. My top track is Let’s Take The Fight To Them. A perfect track for guillotining the rich. This whole album is just pure metallic crust, so if your a punk or metal head looking for a bridge, this has descended from the vines of the ancient wood to choke your soul. Play it loud enough to see what creatures are down.
